BEEKEEPING LIBRARY
As of a few months ago, we restarted the club library of beekeeping reference materials and other literature. I have purchased a video and a few books for the club to read. I have also donated one book based on beekeeping that is fun to read.
Current holdings:
Books:
- The Backyard Beekeeper by Kim Flottum - a great read for beginner and intermediate beekeepers explaining everything from biology to hands-on techniques.
- Bad Beekeeping by Ron Mishka - this book follows the life of a beekeeper on his way through commercial beekeeping and then back to hobby beekeeping. A fun read and informative.
- Increase Essentials by Laurence John Connor - explains the practice of splitting and increasing both brood and hive numbers. This goes into detail some of the correct and incorrect assumptions on increasing hive populations.
Videos:
- Instrumental Insemination of Honey Bee Queens by Sue Cobey - researcher and manager of the UC Davis Honey Bee Research labratory in Davis, California. She demonstrates the techniques and instruments necessary in this process of instrumental insemination. Here in Southern California, this is growing into a mandatory technique in order to insure the true European line of honey bees.
