BECOME A BEEKEEPER
The Beekeepers Association of Southern California is proud to present the “BECOME A BEEKEEPER” lecture series to take someone who knows absolutely nothing about bees and teach them over the course of a year what they need to know to competently keep bees. The March session will be all about equipment.
I will be discussing the history of various types of hives. What hives are used now and the pros and cons of each. A through discussion of the Langstroth hive, why it works, the various components and options, what you need, what you do not need and what is used by pollinators. Then we will discuss the various types of frames, various tools you will use in working with bees, hive stands, clothing, gloves, feeders and the pros and cons of all of them. I will recommend a few books and periodicals you may wish to purchase to get a deeper understanding of bees and beekeeping.
I have tried and learned about many different types of equipment and hope to impart my knowledge so that you will buy what you need and not waste your money on useless items. Please wait to purchase your equipment till after this meeting.
For those who missed the last meeting you can still catch up so please come as this is a crucial meeting for beginners. For members who have friends or relatives considering taking up beekeeping please encourage them to attend this meeting as it will set the groundwork for future lectures.
This lecture will be followed by a question and answer session so write down any questions you may have.
